چکیده

The SeaWiFS ocean colour sensor on board the SeaStar (Orbview 2) satellite is able to derive the chlorophyll concentration in the surface sea water. The chlorophyll algorithm employed is based on the ratio of radiance or reflectance measured in the blue and green spectral bands. Regression between the band ratio and the in-situ measurements of chlorophyll values gives the coefficients for the retrieval equation. It is commonly known that the standard SeaWiFS chlorophyll algorithm (OC4) is generally applicable only in open ocean (case 1 waters). This algorithm is not expected to be valid in coastal waters (case 2 waters) containing other constituents such as sediments and dissolved organic matter. In this study, we simulate SeaWiFS reflectance spectra of coastal waters using an analytical model based on the quasi-single scattering approximation. The OC4 algorithm is then applied to the simulated spectra to derive chlorophyll concentration. The derived chlorophyll value are compared with the actual chlorophyll values used to generate the spectra. The results show that the OC4 algorithm is valid only for sea waters with low dissolved organic matter, but the accuracy deteriorates for typical coastal waters with high dissolved organic matter.

SeaWiFS validation in European coastal waters using optical and bio-geochemical measurements

The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) Sea viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS) began operational measurement of ocean colour in September 1997. Upgrades to the SeaWiFS data processing system (SeaDAS) have occurred frequently and the effects of these revisions on the remotely sensed estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration (chl-a) have been significant. Measurements of ch...

Decadal changes in global ocean chlorophyll

[1] The global ocean chlorophyll archive produced by the CZCS was revised using compatible algorithms with SeaWiFS. Both archives were then blended with in situ data to reduce residual errors. This methodology permitted a quantitative comparison of decadal changes in global ocean chlorophyll from the CZCS (1979–1986) and SeaWiFS (1997–2000) records. Global spatial distributions and seasonal var...

Validation of SeaWiFS chlorophyll a concentrations in the Southern Ocean: A revisit

Surface chlorophyll a concentrations (Ca, mg m ) in the Southern Ocean estimated from SeaWiFS satellite data have been reported in the literature to be significantly lower than those measured from in situ water samples using fluorometric methods. However, we found that highresolution (∼1 km/pixel) daily SeaWiFS Ca (Ca) data (SeaDAS4.8, OC4v4 algorithm) was an accurate measure of in situ Ca duri...

Phytoplankton chlorophyll distributions and primary production in the Southern Ocean

Satellite ocean color data from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) were used to examine distributions of chlorophyll concentration within the Southern Ocean for the period October 1997 through September 1998. Over most of the Southern Ocean, mean chlorophyll concentrations remained quite low (,0.3–0.4 mg m). Phytoplankton blooms where chlorophyll concentration exceeded 1.0 mg m...
